Presentazione, Tenuta del Barco

The Tenuta del Barco (the Barco estate) gets its name from an ancient dry wall, or “BARCO”, the handicraft of master wall builders. Little remains of the old fold, used over the centuries to provide a temporary haven for herds of sheep and goats, only the portion enclosing the farm’s pine grove. Just a few hundred meters from the wild sand dunes of the Salento coastline, there’s a 17th-century farming village, the Masseria Porvica, right in the center of the Tenuta; from here one can reach the natural, public beach and the Ionian Sea in just a few minutes by bicycle. Guests may also use the bathing establishment facilities and the Tenuta’s attended parking lots, located along the Ionian beach. The more than one hundred hectares of the Tenuta del Barco have always been used for growing wine grapes (the Malvasia Nera and Negromare grape varieties on the Tenuta produce prestigious appellation wines), table grapes, olives for oil, durum wheat, melons and tomatoes. There are also some replanted areas dedicated to preserving native hardwood species and typical Mediterranean shrubbery and low trees, not to mention the pasture lands for sheep and goats. By reservation only, the Tenuta del Barco offers lodging and dining in seven residences that open onto the courtyard of the farm-house; in the old days they were used for storing grain or as stalls for the oxen. Restored in authentic Mediterranean style, these residences feature traditional vaulted ceilings made of Carparino slate and simple, rustic furnishings. They have one or two rooms and all come with a cooking nook and private bath facilities with accommodations for the handicapped. In older times the residences were used to store cereals and as stables for oxen, from which they fondly take their names. Carefully renovated with the utmost respect paid to the Mediterranean tradition, the residences are characterised by sober, stylish design.

Transportation is available to and from the Taranto Central train station (35 km) and to and from the Airport of Brindisi (55 km) or Bari (100 km).
