One if by Land has great, old, inimitable bones. Which is a very good thing, because my companions and I didn't get any flesh — or, for that matter, grains or vegetables — for a while. The menu is for the most part a mix of classic and contemporary American and Continental, and it's strewn with luxurious promises: foie gras, beef Wellington. But the limited portion of it that we sampled on this night tasted like the output of an undistinguished hotel banquet hall. One if by Land, which has been around since 1972, needs to do better. Correction: it doesn't need to, and that's probably the problem. It can get by on ambience alone. If only it could wed that ambience to food of a higher caliber.
